Dots reversed

Available as an on-demand self-paced version

  • Five recorded sessions. Approximately 15 hours to complete.
  • With extensive learning resources including several quantified models, spreadsheets for mounding effect calculations, case studies, etc.
  • Instruction by: Michael Payne, P.Geo., P.Eng.; Ian Ralston, P.L.Eng. and Jim Andersen, AScT., ROWP.
  • Fees are $750 plus GST.

Course Purpose

Continuing professional development for Professional Engineers and Geologists practicing in the onsite sewerage field and for experienced Registered Onsite Wastewater Practitioners with the Planner certification.

This course provides a fast-paced refresher for soils characterization, treatment processes in soil, water mounding effects under dispersal systems and delivers advanced competencies for custom design of soil-based treatment and dispersal systems including departures from minimum system length/linear loading standards, horizontal separation and other potential departures from the BC Sewerage System Standard Practice Manual.

This course is best suited for Practitioners and Professionals with previous training and experience for soils characterization and design of onsite sewerage systems.

Course Content

  • Advanced site and soil assessment in accordance with the USDA Soil Classification system and the BC Sewerage System Standard Practice Manual (SPM).
  • Soils based treatment principles and application of the SPM dispersal standards. Including an overview of the SPM Volume IV - Rationale for soil dispersal design.
  • Estimating seasonal saturation levels for vertical separation determination.
  • Challenges to compliance with the SPM Minimum System Contour Length and Linear Loading Rate standards. Strategies and rationale for departures, including in-situ mounding tests and other quantifiable approaches to custom linear loading rates.
  • Sewerage system design for non-residential high strength waste, including organic loading approaches.
  • An introduction to nutrients attenuation and de-nitrification.
  • An introduction to standard practice for departures from horizontal separation standards including well setbacks. The required scope of analysis, mathematical modelling and reporting for setback departures will be presented.

Format

  • Instructor-led lecture with case studies and mathematical modelling exercises.
  • Learning resources are provided including digital files for:
    • BC Sewerage System Regulation.
    • BC Sewerage System Standard Practice Manual.
    • BC Manual of Composting Toilet and Greywater Practice.
