ROWP Certification Support Courses

DETAILED COURSE OUTLINES:

EQUIP OS110 - ROWP Certification Prep

Next Scheduled Online Delivery:

  •  August 18 - September 10, 2020.
  •  Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:30 - 9:00 pm, eight sessions.

Course Purpose:

The purpose of this course is to launch your application to the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC (ASTTBC) for certification as a Registered Onsite Wastewater Practitioner (ROWP).

Participants will become familiar with the ASTTBC conditions of ROWP Certification, and will achieve the common core occupational competencies required by ASTTBC for all ROWP endorsement categories, and will complete the mandatory ASTTBC Jurisprudence Exam.

Note that ASTTBC's requirements for ROWP certification include the common core competencies PLUS at least one of the Specialty Areas of Competency corresponding to the category(ies) of certification sought by the applicant. This course covers the common core. Subsequent courses cover the specialty competencies for Installation, Planning, Maintenance and Inspection. Applicants can pursue ROWP certification with just one of the specialty endorsements, or multiple categories. For example, to become a ROWP Installer, we recommend OS110 plus OS120 - Installation Intro.

After this course, you will need to continue self-study learning strategies and experiential learning. ASTTBC requires submission of work examples.  We provide on-going support for your development of work examples.

We can provide onsite supervision and mentoring by suitably qualified ROWPs or Professional Engineers in your area, including serving as your Authorized Person for initial work examples if required. You need an Authorized Person to 'sign off and stamp' Filings, certifications, maintenance or inspection reports that are provided to clients. We can do that!

Or we can provide desktop review of your work example submissions - a more affordable alternative if your initial work examples do not require onsite supervision by our team of  Authorized Persons. For example, you can complete planning, maintenance or inspection work examples based on a 'mock up' approach … real sites, 'real' photos, but documents created only for ROWP application purposes, without submissions of Filings, certifications, maintenance or inspection reports 'signed off' by an Authorized Person.

EQUIP OS130 - Planning Intro

Next Scheduled Online Delivery:

  • October 6 - November 12, 2020.
  • Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:30 - 9:00 pm, twelve sessions.

Course Purpose:
This course provides training for planning (design) of on-site sewerage systems in BC. The purpose is to provide the foundational knowledge required by the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC as a condition of certification as a Registered Onsite Wastewater Practitioner – Planner.

Participants will also become familiar with the work experience requirements and administrative procedures for approval of ROWP applicants by ASTTBC.

Training Methodology:

Planning is a complex task. The required competencies are extensive. Planners should be able to design systems for a wide range of site and soil conditions, including complex systems such as sand mounds, drip systems etc. Delivering instruction of those essential skills within a week or two is not practicable.

Our approach is to deliver a short and affordable course, covering the required competencies to design a simple gravity dispersal system AND a simple pressure dispersal system. We won't tackle complex system design for drip dispersal, sand mounds and sand lined trenches, sand filters, evapotranspiration beds, or combined treatment and dispersal systems. We will offer those advanced skills in subsequent 'home study' modules using self-paced e-learning software, supplemented by webinars and field workshops.

Note that the ASTTBC requirements for ROWP - Planner certification include work experience …  demonstrated by submission (to ASTTBC) of a minimum of three system designs, including at least one using uniform dispersal methods. They do not require work examples for 'advanced' systems such as sand mounds, drip dispersal, etc. Therefore, this one-week course will remain laser-focussed on design of gravity dispersal and simple pressure dispersal systems.

Content:

• Fundamentals of onsite sewerage design
• The Sewerage System Regulation
• The Sewerage System Standard Practice Manual
• Site and Soil Assessment
• Specification and configuration of pre-treatment
• Specification & configuration of non-uniform (gravity) dispersal systems
• Specification and configuration of uniform (pressure) dispersal systems
• Documentation for sewerage Filings and Certification submissions

Participants will complete a design for a simple gravity dispersal system and a conventional pressure distribution system using type 2 treatment. These may be submitted as work examples to support your application for ROWP Planner Certification by ASTTBC.

Format:

• Twelve online sessions, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:30 - 9:00 pm, six weeks.
• The webinars are live and interactive, using screen sharing software and conference call audio.
• Instructor led lecture with learning exercises, group discussion, review sessions.
• Instruction by Jim Andersen, ROWP, AScT. and Brent Dennis, P.Eng.

Fees:

  • $1200.00 plus GST

We have an excellent site with a system using two - type 2 treatment plants and uniform dispersal. We might fit in another site or two also, subject to 'whatever Jeff has going on that week'!
  • Participants will complete maintenance service reports and inspection reports for a simple gravity dispersal system and a conventional pressure distribution system using type 2 treatment. These may be used as work examples for submission to ASTTBC in support of your application for ROWP - Maintenance Provider and/or Private Inspection certification.
